Asphalt Shingles in Southern Minnesota
Article by: Eric Ronningen

Most of us never even think about our roof until there is a problem.  Your roof is one of the things that shields the exterior as well as the interior of your home from damage.  Not only does it protect your home but it can also add a great deal of value.  When choosing a new roof; the cost, material, style, & colors available are important considerations.  It is also important to think about the warranty, life span of the roof, and the amount of maintenance required.  Asphalt shingles are one of the most common options on the market.  They are also the easiest to install and replace if necessary.

Asphalt shingles look good and have a long life.  They are one of the most popular roofing options and are seen on most homes today.  Approximately 80% of all roofs in America are made from asphalt shingles.  They are one of the least expensive roofing options and come in a variety of colors, including solids and patterns.  Normally, they are guaranteed for 20-30 years.  Asphalt shingles are made of fiberglass infused with asphalt that is topped with ceramic or mineral granules of a sand-like consistency.  These granules protect the asphalt from ultra-violet light and add color to the shingles.  Asphalt shingles can have a variety of wind resistant options, so if you live in an area such as Lake City, Minnesota, you may want to make sure the tiles you choose have a higher wind resistance rating.

While asphalt shingles are one of the most popular roofing options out there, it is important to note that they have less insulation than most other roofs.  This means that they do not keep air from escaping your home as much as other more expensive roofing options do.  If you live in an area such as New Ulm, Minnesota, you will want to check the asphalt options available to you.  Low insulated roofs can cause your utility bills to be higher since it takes more energy to keep your home at a consistent temperature.  Asphalt shingles are also a petroleum based product which is not recyclable due to the fiberglass that has been added to the shingles.  While regular asphalt shingles can be affordable in a variety of colors & styles, they have the worst track record for environmental impact.
